Description

The Entrhographic encounter has, more often than not, yielded the outsider's perspective. In this volume, local and international voices engaging the 'field' and the 'archive' interrogate objects and a few of anthropology's ancestors. In this way, fresh insights are gained that enrich our understanding of colonial history, the motivations of its many actors, and what it means for ethnographic collections, contemporary expressions and communities of origin. Invariably, through this exercise, the authors of this volume too become entangled in the genealogies of objects, of subjects and of their mediators. As museums in Europe and the UK open up their collections to meaningful forms of exchange - indeed precipitating a 'return of culture' - the theories found throughout this volume can elucidate these new encounters. This is an important intellectual exercise as certainly unearthing the ghosts of colonialism will yield new responses, and their effects may extend beyond the control of ancestors, of genealogies and anthropological theories. - Michael Heneise is a PhD scholar in South Asian Studies at the University of Edinburg, and founding member of THE KOHIMA INSTITUTE

Sitting here in the hills of Burma looking out towards the Patkai range and the nagas, i wish all success to this important volume of essays on Naga studies. It will add value information and insight on one of the best documented of all minorities in the world. - Alan Macfarlane, Emeritus Professor of Anthropological Science and Life Fellow of King's College, University of Cambridge

"This Excellent volume by the Kohima Institute is a timely and commendable effort to disseminate interdisciplinary research findings on Northeast India by both established and emerging national and international scholars, which will open opportunities for the exchange of ideas and collaborative research." Vibha Joshi, guest professor at the University of Tuebingen and associate of University of Oxford
