Meet Maipo Mary Konyak, the woman behind Shahkai’s Kitchen, whose love for traditional food opened an unexpected path to entrepreneurship.

When Maipo Mary Konyak began sharing cooking videos on Instagram in March 2026, she wasn’t planning to start a business.
She wanted to return to something she loved.
From Aboi Town in Mon district, Nagaland, Mary had spent years trying to find a way to support her family. A government job had once been her biggest dream. But repeated setbacks left her uncertain about what would come next.
In her account of that time, Mary speaks openly about struggling with depression and losing her appetite. Cooking became something familiar she could turn towards—a hobby that gave her a reason to create, share and reconnect with food.
She began with the flavours she knew best: the traditional foods of her home.
An Unexpected Audience
Mary’s videos introduced viewers to the food she loved and the Konyak traditions behind it. Then her audience began growing in ways she had never imagined.
Three of her reels reached one million, 1.2 million and 1.6 million views.
Behind those numbers were people discovering her cooking, asking about her food and wanting to taste it themselves. What had begun as a personal effort to reconnect with her interests was opening a new possibility.
Then a customer from Arunachal Pradesh ordered 65 packets of pickles.
While preparing the order, Mary filmed the process and shared a pickle-making reel. More orders followed. Customers who tasted her pickles returned for larger quantities—some ordering as much as a kilogram.
A hobby was becoming a livelihood.
A Name That Became Her Own Business
“Shahkai” is Mary’s title. Today, it is also the name through which customers know her food.
Shahkai’s Kitchen grew from her love for cooking and her wish to share traditional Konyak delicacies. Its range includes beef, chicken and pork pickles, bringing the flavours of Nagaland to everyday meals.

For Mary, the connection to home runs deep. Smoked pork, axone, king chilli and Konyak delicacies are among the foods she could happily eat again and again. They carry memories of her roots and the culture she wants to keep sharing.
That sense of belonging shapes what she hopes customers will experience, too.
For someone living far from Nagaland, a familiar flavour can bring comfort to an ordinary day. For someone tasting Naga food for the first time, it can be the beginning of a connection with a place and its people.
Care Behind Every Packet
Mary describes her pickles through three qualities: authentic taste, a connection to traditional Konyak food culture, and homemade care.
Her process begins with carefully selecting ingredients. She prepares them using traditional methods, paying attention to the flavours that make the food recognisable to her. Once ready, the pickles are packed securely for customers.
She wants people to enjoy their meals and feel the care behind what she makes.
A spoonful alongside lunch. A familiar accompaniment at dinner. Something to share with a friend who has never tasted food from Nagaland.
These are small moments, but they are where a food business becomes part of someone’s life.
A Dream Growing Beyond Her Kitchen
What makes Mary proudest is being able to turn a difficult period into something meaningful.
Shahkai’s Kitchen now gives her a way to support her family while sharing her community’s food culture. Her ambition is to build a recognised brand across India without losing that connection to her roots.
As the business grows, she hopes to support local farmers and create employment for people in her community. She also wants younger generations to remain connected to traditional Konyak food.
These are goals she is working towards, one order at a time.
Mary’s journey is still unfolding. It began with uncertainty, followed by the decision to do something she loved. An Instagram video reached a stranger. A customer placed an order. Others came back for more.
Today, every packet from Shahkai’s Kitchen carries a part of that journey—from Aboi to another home, another table, another person discovering her food.
